• Mesh gutter guards: These guards are made from materials like vinyl-coated steel or aluminum mesh, which allow rainwater to filter through while blocking pests, leaves, and other debris. The mesh is designed with tiny holes that are small enough to block out leaves and large objects but still allow water to pass through without restriction. Mesh gutter guards are available in multiple installation styles and tend to perform better than screen gutter guards.
• Solid cover gutter guards: Solid cover gutter guards are typically made of plastic or aluminum and fit snugly over your gutters, protecting them from debris while still allowing water flow. These guards work by creating a barrier between the gutter and the elements while still providing an unobstructed channel for water to drain away. Unlike mesh guards, solid covers completely cover the gutter system and eliminate the possibility of leaves and other debris entering the system in the first place. Additionally, these gutter covers are designed with a slight curve, which helps to guide rainwater towards your downspouts without risk of overflow or flooding.
• Brush gutter guards: These guards are made from durable bristles that collect leaves, sticks, and other debris while still allowing water to flow freely. The bristles act like a filter, trapping leaves and other objects on the top side of the guard, ensuring that your gutters are kept clear and free-flowing. The design of these gutter guards is flexible enough to fit most standard gutter systems, and they tend to be very affordable. They do require frequent cleaning, as they only trap debris.
• Screen gutter guards: Screen gutter guards consist of a perforated plastic or metal sheet that is placed atop your gutters. The sheet contains holes designed to block debris, but they are often large enough for smaller forms of debris to pass through. When properly installed, reverse-curve gutter guards leave a gap between the gutter lip and the guard itself. This allows debris to slide off the curve of the guard as water moves with the curve and into your gutters. Reverse-curve gutter guards can falter during heavy rain, however, and they can be aesthetically unappealing to some homeowners.
• Foam gutter guards: These guards feature a foam insert that fits inside the gutter and is designed to catch larger pieces of debris while allowing water to pass through it into the gutter. These should only ever be pursued as a temporary solution, as foam requires consistent cleaning to remain effective and is prone to a host of other issues.
